Changing gears; around what rpm?

Hello everyone,

I don't know if this is the right place to ask this question, but i'll give it a try. I own a 1999 Ducati Monster 600 Dark. She has 29.000 km already, last 2000 ridden by me.

Now, i know this might sound foolish, but being my first bike and all.. well, i'm not sure if i change gears around the right rpm. I heard too many things so far, so i'm asking you: around what rpm do you change gears?!
So far i used to change around 3000 rpm 2-nd gear and third gear and around 4000-5000 rmp fourth and fifth gear.

I have a friend that says in the city he does not change to second gear so.. i keep wondering who is mistaking here.

This depends on how much of a hurry you are in, here's no set rpm you should be shifting at.
Each bike is different as well, depends on when it's in it's sweet spot. For your bike, that sweet spot is most likely in the 2500>6000 range. Running below 2500 would be lugging the motor, and over 6000 is most likely spinning the motor faster than you typically would need.
For me, around town, not in a rush, I usually shift up in the 4500 > 6000 rpm range. On a twisty road, in more of a hurry I usually shift in the 7000>8500 rpm range. And when really having fun, I shift right around 10,000 RPM. Hope this helps.

Hi, I'm responding to your note concerning gear change RPM. It sounds to me like you are in the right range. Don't be afraid to rev the bike higher if you need to make time, have fun, or get out of trouble. My experience with Ducati twins is that they seem most comfortable cruising at about 4000rpm. I'm not familiar with the 600, but the bigger bikes are geared for very high speeds and some people tend to run the engine too slow. Enjoyed your profile by the way - take care - Don
